Ingredients
3 cups Water
1 piece Star Anise
1 medium piece Cinnamon
1 piece of 3 cm length Ginger
1/2 tbsp fresh Turmeric or 1/2 tsp dried Turmeric (in one piece)
1 piece Mace
3 Cloves
1 Lemon
Honey according to taste
How to make Ayurvedic Hot Lemon Tea
The only thing you need to prepare is the ginger – simply chop it into a few pieces. Pour the water into a pot, add all the spices as they are and place it onto a stove, bringing it to a boil with the lid on top. Let it boil for about seven minutes.
In the meantime, press out the juice of the lemon. After seven minutes, take the pot off the stove and open the lid. Once the water has stopped boiling, add the juice of the lemon. Of course there are bigger and smaller lemons and people have different taste, some like it more sour, some less – so you can try a few times how much lemon you actually like in your tea.
Now strain the tea, pouring it through a sieve into a teapot, thus removing the bigger spice pieces. Alternatively you can leave them in – they look nice in a glass teapot – and strain them when pouring the tea into cups.
Once in the teapot or the cup, you can add honey according to taste.
Ayurvedic Benefits
This Hot Lemon Tea has all the ingredients to heat you up in cold winter with several ‘warm’ spices that increase pitta. At the same time it reduces your kapha, going down your throat and loosening any stuck mucus that made it hard for you to breathe. The lemon gives you the vitamins your body now needs to keep your immune system up and fight intruders that make you sneeze and cough! Throat ache is soothed and the added honey makes it all go down smoothly!
